Oktoberfest, a beer with 6 million visitors
Oktoberfest officially kicked off in Munich, Germany . More than 9,000 residents of nearby villages, many of them dressed in traditional Alpine attire, marched through the city as part of the annual celebration. Following the parade, it was time for beer - a lot of it. Last year, 7.3 million liters of it were served up. In addition to alcohol, revelers enjoyed live music, food, and dancing. The celebration, which attracts an average of six million people annually, dates back to 1810, where it originated as the celebration of the wedding of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen.

Competitors construct human towers
Competitors created human towers in Valls, Spain. The tradition, which dates back to the early 1700s, features teams working to assemble - and disassemble - a human spire without collapsing. The towers, called castells, can grow several stories high.
Stronger people secure a foundation for the structure, as lighter ones, sometimes children, make their way to the top. It’s up to the final climber to make it to the peak, raise their hand to the sky, then begin the journey down. The tradition began in Valls and is now a popular sport throughout Spain’s Catalonia region.

Behind the curtain at “Swan Lake”
Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake is one of the most famous ballets of all time, and the dancers at St. Petersburg’s Mikhailovsky Theatre have been working to perfect their routine. Rehearsing under the watchful eye of their repetiteur, or dance instructor, they practice their moves until moments before the curtain rises.
For this rendition they perform a version of a critically lauded 1956 adaptation. Modifications of the original 1877 production have been made since Swan Lake’s inception - the first staging of it was almost universally panned. Over time, directors, conductors and even ballerinas have all added changes, leading to several variations.
